ukiaHaiku Festival and Awards Ceremony
features winning poems and traditional Japanese entertainment
The Mendocino community has the opportunity to spend an afternoon basking in the haiku form of poetry. The ukiaHaiku Festival and Awards Ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 1, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm at the SPACE Theatre on 508 West Perkins St. in Ukiah. The drumbeats of Yokayo Taiko, a drumming ensemble directed by Jennifer Ung, will welcome the crowd beginning at 1:30 pm, followed by the soaring, meditative sounds of shakuhachi, a Zen-inspired Japanese form of bamboo flute music, performed by shakuhachi master Masayuki Koga and his students.
The awards ceremony begins at 2 pm. Winning poets from age 6 to 66+ will read their poems aloud to an appreciative audience and receive their awards. A reception with refreshments will follow, during which audience members will have the opportunity to scan many of the fine poems (out of more than 1300 submitted) that did not make the final cut and to hear more shakuhachi flute music. A booklet of winning poems will be on sale before and after the ceremony.
Please note that the venue for the festival has changed from previous years. To reach the SPACE Theatre, take the Perkins Street off-ramp from Hwy 101. Go west to 508 W. Perkins and park in the Theatre’s lot. The festival is free to the public. It is made possible by the generous support of the Festival’s sponsors Susan Sparrow, Hal Zina Bennett and Tenacity Press, Mendocino Book Company, OCO Time Restaurant, Grace Hudson Museum & Sun House, Nine Trees Design, CGC Website Designs and Colored Horse Studios.
