Staff and volunteers at the Lower Lake Schoolhouse Museum’s Living History Day

Dr. Mark Cooper of Clearlake will give a lecture entitled "The Story of the U.S.S. Pensacola from 1869 to 1999," on Sunday, August 29 at 2:00 p.m. at the Historic Courthouse Museum in downtown Lakeport.  The talk will include artifacts, a diorama and a Power Point presentation.  Dr. Cooper teaches U.S. History at Yuba College, and is a member of the North Bay Civil War Roundtable in Santa Rosa.  The lecture is sponsored by the Friends of the Lake County Museum and admission is free. Refreshments will be served. Please call 263-4555 for more information.
Sailboats and Steamboats and Other Things that Float

A new photo exhibit is currently on display in the upstairs hallway of the Courthouse Museum in Lakeport.  The beautiful historic photographs depict life on Clear Lake between 1866 and the early 1900’s. Residents and tourists alike traveled the waters in passenger steamboats to get from place to place before the roads were built. Cargo and building materials were transported, and of course pleasure-seekers dressed in their Sunday best cruised in relative luxury in beautiful sailing vessels.  One photo shows members of the Sylar Family ready for a Sunday afternoon sail—but wait why is he pointing that gun at the photographer?  Come by and enjoy this interesting glimpse into the past.
Also a new exhibit  "Mount Konocti Rediscovered," in anticipation of the opening of the mountain to the public. All the frequently asked questions we receive will be answered in this fascinating exhibit: Is it a volcano?  Who lives up there?  How was the mountain revered by the Native Americans?  Stop by this summer and enjoy both of these interesting new exhibits.
