Illumine Photo Contest

Entry: Paid Entry
Entry Fee: $24 4 images, $5 each additional image
Winner is: Judged
Deadline: February 05, 2014

Darkroom Gallery is accepting entries into the Illumine Photo Contest. Light is that which compels a photograph into being: shifting, glowing, luminous, obscure or brilliant. For Illumine we are looking for works that explore the vast languages of light. Low light, bright light and every stop in between. Light can be luminous & rich, or a stark spotlight, it can wildly dance, or softly edge darkness and cast shadows. Light can reflect and sparkle or be blinding and disarming. Natural light vs. man-made light sources: sunrises and sunsets, moonlight and neon light! Photographs are steeped in emotive qualities that go well beyond the work’s subject and content, an almost indecipherable layer is em-parted through the usage of light.

We offer free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of our exhibition, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work and retain all rights to their photographs

Juror: Robert Hirsch

PRIZE DETAILS: All selected entries are exhibited in our gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog.
Juror's Choice receives a 30x48" vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image, free entry into a future exhibition, and a free exhibition catalog.
Honorable Mentions receive free exhibition catalogs and free entry in a future exhibition.
People's Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit

Posterheroes Social Communication Contest

Deadline:  February 26, 2014
Contest's Website:  [link]

The international communication and social graphic art contest Posterheroes has just launched its forth edition. This time Posterheroes proposes a debate on Systemic Food, which aims at investigating the theme of food in its social, environmental and economic nature.

Economic development and the changes of lifestyle towards a sedentary and urbanised society, led to a radical change in the food habits. This phenomenon, called the nutrition transition, together with the loss of the culinary traditions and the demand for low-cost products has led to a standardization of food and the loss of the concept of quality .

Today it is necessary to renew the way in which the food theme is addressed starting from our choices. How can the consumer change the food system? What choices the citizens are called to do? These questions are declined in four different aspects, with a common social impact:

The Challenge Of Biodiversity
Obesity And Malnutrition
Emigration And Immigration
Territorial Interconnected System

The creative people around the world are therefore called to express their sensitivity and their ideas through the creation of a graphic poster 50x70 at 150dpi (2953x4134 pixels), max 5 MB, vertical layout, jpg or pdf format.

There is no entry fee.

There are no age, nationality or profession limits, the contest is open to all graphic designers, creative people, illustrators, social communicator, world-changers.

For each categories, the jury, composed by international experts in the field of graphics and communication, will identify the top ten proposals, for a total of 40 selected posters.

After the closure of the contest the posters will be published in the catalog of Posterheroes and they will become part of future exhibitions and events that PLUG will organize. Moreover, the selected posters will be included within the events organized by Biennale Democrazia in order to create a traveling exhibition through the streets of Turin (Italy).

The Clark Hulings Fund For Burgeoning Visual Artists

The Clark Hulings Fund for Burgeoning Visual Artists helps early-stage professionals seize opportunities to drive their careers forward. By providing targeted support at pivotal moments, The Fund strives to improve the prospects of up-and-coming individuals, and enable many more people to encounter and be enriched by their work.

The Fund considers proposals from professional artists who have secured tangible prospects for advancing their careers, but lack sufficient financial resources to capitalize on those opportunities. Examples include but are not limited to: the completion of work due to a gallery, museum, or private collection, the transportation of work or of the artist to an exhibition of that artist’s material, the management of logistical or technical requirements to realize a project, etc.

The Fund does not support performance, literary or commercial work.

Who Should Apply?
Professional painters, sculptors and artists working on paper who:

Employ traditional media, not including photography, film or video.
Have had their work published and/or exhibited professionally.
Have been hired or commissioned to create new work.
Have received opportunities to exhibit their work.

Submission Requirements:

Fiscal Sponsor: The Fund cannot make awards to individuals.
Artist Statement
Request for Support, including a detailed proposal and images, if available
Examples of previous work
Supporting materials, if relevant (letter of intent from a gallery, commission statement, referrals, references, etc.).

Review Process
A group of five panelists will review the proposals of qualified applicants and advise on specific grants to be made during each cycle. One of the five will be a director of the Fund, either Mary or Elizabeth Hulings. The other four will be members of the visual art community (i.e., artists, critics, curators, ga llerists, publishers, scholars, private collectors, etc.). The goal is to have as broad a representation as possible. With the exception of The Fund directors, panelists will contribute for two-year terms, which will be staggered. Panelists may serve multiple terms.

Award Amounts and Cycle
The Fund aims to distribute its first award in November 2013. Beginning in 2014, two awards will be given per year, one in each category (1-painting, drawing and works on paper, and 2-sculpture). The Metro Silver Line combines service on the dedicated busways along the 110 Freeway (Harbor Transitway) and Interstate 10 (El Monte Busway), with additional connecting stops through downtown Los Angeles.

Art opportunities for the Harbor Gateway Transit Center, Manchester Station, Slauson Station, and the 37th Street/USC Station have been identified. World Food Day Poster Design Contest

Deadline:  September 30, 2013

 Contest's Website:  [link]

Co-organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Women’s Guild in Rome, this contest ask children and youth between the ages of 5 and 17 to design, draw or paint a poster based on the theme "Healthy Food Systems".

Total world population is expected to hit 9 billion by 2050. To make sure everyone has enough to eat, we will need to rethink our food systems. We want to reduce the impact of food systems on the natural environment, because food production today produces a lot of greenhouse gases, puts a strain on water supplies, and creates a threat to biodiversity. We need to understand better how food shopping choices affect poor farmers in other parts of the world. And we will need to learn how to waste less food - in transport, in storage, in supermarkets, and at home.

Poster entries may be drawn, painted or sketched using pens, pencils, crayons or charcoal, or using oil, acrylic or watercolor paint, as well as mixed media. Digitally created artwork is also permitted. No photographs are allowed. Only one entry per person. The file must be in JPG format. Maximum allowable file size is 1.5 MB.

There is no entry fee.

The contest is open to children and youth between the ages of 5 and 17, living in any country of the world.

Winners will be announced on 16 October 2013 (World Food Day) in three categories:

ages 5 to 8
ages 9 to 12
ages 13 to 17

The top three poster designs in all three categories will be published on World Food Day website, and shared through the Facebook accounts of FAO and the EndingHunger movement.

Moreover, certificates of recognition, signed by a United Nations official, will be sent to all the winners. First-place winners in each category will receive also the popular EndingHunger T-shirt and a second surprise gift.

My name is Dan O’Brien and I am looking for writers, specifically northern California writers for a regional anthology I am putting together. It is meant to highlight wonderful short fiction, poetry, essays, photography, and artwork from a particular area told by the people who live there, who breathe northern California.

I graduated from California State University, Chico, completing my graduate work there as well, and love the idea of highlighting the diverse voices north of Sacramento. I love the Sacramento valley, the mountains to the north and east, as well as the beautiful coast. In this way I can give back to a place that has given me so much.

In addition to this press, I operate a literary and publishing consulting business and maintain a blog where I write about publishing, marketing, editing, independent authors, and sports. I have been the senior editor and marketing director of a national magazine, and I have published more than a dozen of my own novels and hundreds of articles.

You can find out more about the press here:

It is my great hope to disseminate the message of the press through writing groups, forums, libraries, bookstores, colleges, conferences, and places where writers and artists congregate. If you could pass this on to writers you know who might be interested, I would be grateful.

Call for Submissions for Toad, an online journal of art and writing.  No submission fee–just a chance to be heard, metaphorically speaking.  Take a leap into the deep end of the pond…

Toad comprises any number of species of artists of the creative order, often characterized by their exciting work, thick skin, and wart-like ideas. To maintain its lively form, Toad cultivates bimonthly issues with rotating editors and staff to ensure that the content stays fresh and diverse.

As an ever-evolving amphibian, the editors of Toad select artists (“toadists”) from one of three pools: the first is a flourishing man-made pond, supplied with recommendations offered by previous contributors. The second is their sportive, always popular pool of open submissions. Lastly but not leastly, is the puddle-wonderful artistic response forum, which collects creative kickback from readers to establish an art orgy for all to enjoy.

MEDIA:  They want it all: videos, music, collaborative projects, ekphrastic works, genre-crossing/bending art, and of course, all the usual suspects with Verbal Kint included.

    DEADLINE:  Toad accepts submissions year-around.

Life as an artist isn't easy. We're comfortable with our talent and abilities as artists. We enjoy creating, communicating, and socializing through our art. But we all struggle with the everyday business challenges that are also a part of our world. One of the biggest of those challenges is learning how to market ourselves.

Art For Progress (AFP) is here to help! AFP was created in 2004 by a broad-based group of artists who came to realize by coming together we could leverage our collective relationships while supporting each other through sharing our knowledge and experience. The AFP community is for serious artists who are ready to take a step forward and become part of a dynamic arts community. We offer artists opportunities for exposure through our events and well trafficked web-site, financial support through our grant program,  and valuable resources to enable you to set and reach your goals – whatever those goals may be.

The benefits of AFP's artist membership program include:

    • Marketing, and PR programs
    • Local and national gigs
    • Business resources
    • Free admission to all AFP and industry events
    • Discounts on gear, services, and merchandise
    • Access to affordable health insurance, legal, and banking

"I'm a writer and photography fan, and I run a site called Life, Panoramic ( The idea is that, instead of seeing another collection of tourist photos, we get a very subjective view of life around the world from locals - the people who actually live in each place.

    Always accepting images.

"Basically, I'd like to invite you to participate in Life, Panoramic, showing your city from your perspective (not necessarily entirely tied to graffiti, though that can be as large or small of a component as you'd like). We've had a lot of web designers, teachers, moms and marketers participate. Now, I'd love to expand our horizons to show a wider scope. Entries consist of 10-15 photos, accompanied by brief prose. Don't worry if you aren't the best photographer; just be as earnest as possible. Hope to have you there."
